As soon as the summer months start to fade, the blanket scarves start to pop up everywhere. They are a fall wardrobe staple! What I love about blanket scarves is they are big, cozy, and really easy to make. A blanket scarf bought in the store can range from $20 – $50 dollars! I don’t know about you, but for a piece of fabric, I just can’t do it. Especially when you can buy a couple of yards of fabric and achieve the same thing, sometimes even better!
I love a good bargain. I enjoy fashion and like adding things to my wardrobe, but if it is not on sale, I am not likely to buy it. That is what I love about this scarf, it is so inexpensive. Especially if you hit up your local craft store on a sale, get your coupons ready! You can easily make a few of these scarves with different patterns on a dime. “I have too many blanket scarves!” said no one ever.
What You’ll Need:
- 1 1/2 Yards Flannel Fabric (2 yards if you want a bigger scarf)
- Fabric Scissors
- Pin or needle
Okay, before we start. Remember when you were a kid and you were trying to cut a square out of a rectangle piece of paper? You would fold the outer corner in a cut off the remaining, right? That is what you are going to do with the fabric.
Lay the fabric flat and fold one of the outer corners to the opposite side of the fabric.
Line up the edges and smooth out the fabric. There will be extra fabric on the side. Cut off the extra fabric.
Cut the selvage off the edges off of the fabric. The selvage edge is the finished edge of the fabric, it keeps the fabric from fraying so you will need to cut it off.
Using the pin or needle, carefully pull out individual threads along the edges. Pull them out slowly only a couple of strands at a time. This will give you that gorgeous frayed look.
Continue to pull out threads until the fringe is as long as you would like it. Be careful not to tangle the fringe. Using a small comb to brush out while removing threads can help prevent this.
You are done! How easy was that!? You are now the owner of a cozy, soft, stylish blanket scarf. Enjoy that rewarding feeling of knowing you made it yourself for next to nothing.
You can wear this scarf in a couple of different ways. My favorite way to wear is the handkerchief, or at least that is what I call it because it reminds me of how a cowboy wears it around his neck. Keep the scarf folded in the triangle and wrap around your neck folded edge towards you, then cross the two triangle tips around the back on the neck and pull down over your shoulders. Rock that scarf darling, you look amazing!
