Years ago, fresh out of high school, I went to cosmetology school. It was an interesting experience, to say the least, but I walked away with an esthetics license and spent the next four years practicing.
My time studying skin care was fun and educational but ultimately the universe had other plans for my career path. Although I do not practice anymore, it remains an interest of mine, and taking care of my skin will always be important to me.
With that being said, it is to maintain a decent skincare routine; skincare products are so expensive! A complete skincare routine can include 8 – 10 different products, which adds up! To save money incorporate a couple of different homemade skincare items. It’s also nice to know exactly what you are putting on your skin.
Scrubs are one of the easiest products to make, with most of the ingredients you probably already have. They provide great exfoliation which has many benefits to the skin including smoothing the skin, unclogging pores, improving the skin’s ability to retain moisture, and stimulating blood flow.
Supplies Needed
–Coconut oil
–Organic can sugar
–Brown sugar
–Vitamin E soft gels
-Essential oils
-Container or jar
The base is coconut oil. Coconut oil is some great benefits. It is moisturizing, anti-aging, softens the skin, and can even be used as a makeup remover.
That is blended with some sugar. Organic cane sugar is great for body scrubs and brown sugar is for facial scrubs. Brown sugar is less coarse which is better for the face. Molasses (what brown sugar is colored with) is high in Vitamin B which is an antioxidant that helps reduce fine lines.
Next, comes the extras! Another reason why I love to make my own scrubs, you can change them up and add different skin-friendly ingredients.
Vitamin E oil is an antioxidant and an anti-inflammatory. It helps protect your skin from damaging UV rays, which is great to have in a scrub since your skin is less protected after exfoliation.
Essential oils add fragrance and skin benefits. Lavender oil is considered an all-purpose oil because it is great for all skin types. Eucalyptus oil is antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and stimulating.
Peppermint oil helps with dry skin and reduces redness due to acne. Other oils that can be used include tea tree, lemon, and geranium.
As much as it is tempting to scrub away to get extra smooth skin, over-exfoliation can be damaging to your skin. It is recommended to exfoliate no more than two times per week. Wear facial sunscreen every day even if it is not sunny out, the UV rays still reach your skin.
