We recently moved to a homestead outside of the city and are in love with the space and the slower lifestyle. Also, I am very much in love with the opportunity to bring my style to every room and make it feel even more like home. For someone like me who dreams in paint colors, glimmering new hardware and beautiful furniture pieces, it is a dream come true!
We have been in the new house for about two months. Going into it, I underestimated the work load and thought I would have more done by now. Such a me thing to do. In my mind, I thought I would have at least two rooms done. Then I moved in and remembered how much work moving and home design is! So two months in I finally finished the guest room and I am so happy with it. I hope you enjoy seeing what I put together and that I did it on a dime!
Before
Most people would probably redo their own bedroom first, but I had a clear vision for my guest room from the start. I a should probably put our bedroom redo next on the list though because we still don’t have furniture in our room except the bed! Yup, no dresser, no side tables…it’s a bit of a mess. Like I said, moving is a lot of work!
The vision for the guest room has been swirling around my mind since before I even moved. My mom gave me a few pieces of furniture that my great-grandfather made. My family has always been very good about keeping the family heirlooms. There are many pieces in my home that I can say “my great-grandfather made that!” and it is so heart-warming.
Of these pieces is the dark wood bed frame. It is gorgeous and probably my favorite piece of furniture in the room. It sits on top of a lovely rug I received as a hand me down from my aunt. She bought it in China years ago and the color goes so well with the dark wood.
White was my first choice for the duvet cover because of the contrast against the dark wood. I also wanted I little homestead feel to I so I added striped sheets. I love the simple but vintage vibe it brings. Also, sitting on the bed is a little guest room basket. I got this idea from a cousin (Hi, Katie!) and I just love the idea of giving your guest a few amenities for their visit. A how-to on putting together the perfect guest room basket will be coming up!
The side table was a lengthy but totally worth it DIY project. If you follow me on Instagram, you probably saw my adventure re-finishing this side table. It is made from solid wood which can be rare these days so I wanted to save it. Refinishing furniture can save you money and create something unique! Stacked on top of the side table are a few old books that add to the homestead style vibe.
On the other side of the bed is a chair that goes with a vanity that my great-grand father also made. The simplicity of a singe chair looks so nice. I placed a large mason jar filled with greenery from my backyard, just to bring a little life to the room. Eventually I will put some faux flowers in there and replace them with fresh when my guests visit.
Last, but definitely not least, I replaced the hanging light with a little smaller one. How vintage is that light, you guys!? As much as I wanted to replace it, I still love the vintage vibe of everything in the house. Someone picked that out to go in this room. It was once in style and someone’s choice to bring their vision of this guest room together.
I replaced it with a small semi-flush light from Home Depot to make the room look a little more spacious. I love the look of it, I think is adds a little freshness to the space. Since I was working with a small space, I didn’t want to add too many heavy details, but I think I may want to add something over the bed eventually. Let me know if you have any ideas!
