If you could only pick one; a refreshing summer drink or a cozy winter drink, which one would you choose? As much as I love a festive winter drink like this ginger cranberry gin fizz a refreshing summer cocktail is just too good.
My go-to summer drink is usually something blended and icy like this peach wine slush or this grapefruit ginger bourbon smash. Blended drinks make me like I am enjoying a dessert and a drink, but this grapefruit smash has been climbing the charts.
This drink was inspired by one of the best places. My grandmother’s old cookbook. It is one of the original Betty Crocker Picture Cookbooks, it’s worn, faded, and shows years of use for delicious recipes, and the best part – is it’s stuffed full of notes and clippings of more delicious recipes.
My grandmother added all sorts of notes, every time I use it, it is amazing to see her handwriting and read her tips to make the recipe better. You can look forward to many more recipes from this cookbook gem.
In addition to her many notes, she added newspaper clippings for recipes. One of them was a small segment about cool summer drinks that includes two drink recipes. The grapefruit smash immediately caught my eye. It looked so simple and delicious and I was dying for a new summer drink.
It only needs three ingredients plus the vodka, that’s it! The clipping says Vodka is optional but c’mon…
I decided to give this recipe a try and as a result, I have a new favorite summer drink. Blend this drink together in minutes and enjoy it for a last-minute girls’ night, or enjoy it at a summer barbeque. It is refreshing and just the right amount of sweetness from the orange juice and sour from the grapefruit.
Okay, so here is the scoop. Fresh grapefruit blended with orange juice, Grand Marnier or orange liqueur, and vodka. Blended until smooth, serve over ice and garnish with a grapefruit wedge and a couple of sprigs of thyme.
Done! How easy is that? Now sit back, and enjoy the summer sun while sipping on your new favorite drink.
