Halloween is one of my favorite holidays to decorate for. It’s fun, playful, but can be so stylish. It can though sometimes feel a little overwhelming and pricey!
I don’t know about you, but this year snuck up on me! Usually, I am way ahead when it comes to spooky decor, but this year one minute it was summer and the next it was halfway through October. Oh, 2020! Is it just me or has this year felt like one really long day? I can’t keep track of what day it is!
Most years I go a little over the top, creating a Halloween front porch or making fun DIYs like this creepy glowing doll head but this year I went simple and stylish.
There simple and easy ways to decorate that will not break the bank. If there is one thing that I love more than Halloween decor, it is coming up with creative ways to decorate that save money.
Stock photos
Stock photos are one of the easiest ways to decorate. There are some great sites to find free pictures that can be hung as art for the season. Pexels and Unsplash are my favorite sites, you can search for keywords to find a specific style of photo.
This stock photo of a small jack o’ lantern by Alexandro David pops right off the black shiplap wall. I enjoy changing my art for the season and will often keep the printed photo in the frame behind the current photo so I can use it for next year.
Vintage Books
Vintage books just have that spooky vibe. They work so well for subtle Halloween decor. Stack them and place a candle holder on top or shelve them and place a pumpkin as a bookend.
Vintage books can be found at estate sales, thrift stores, or even online, and don’t underestimate the power of the hand-me-down.
Believe it or not, but that witchcraft book was my grandfather’s; if you knew my grandfather you would be surprised. I was when my mom passed this book onto me, it still has his book stamp on the inside of the front cover and I love that I can use it as decor every year.
Glass Bottles and little details
Amber and dark brown glass bottles are a great addition to any fall decor. The color is spot-on for the season and they usually have a vintage vibe to them. Find them at thrift stores or use what you have in your home.
I used an empty Worcestershire sauce bottle next to a small glass bottle and placed them in an old wire basket that I spray painted gold. In addition to the glass bottles, I filled the basket with small pumpkins, decorative rocks, and a vintage doorknob.
Pumpkins, pumpkins, pumpkins
It’s an obvious one, but pumpkins might be the easiest way to decorate for Halloween. Small pumpkins placed around the house will add a simple but festive feel to your decor. Pair two small pumpkins, one slightly bigger than the other, or place a pumpkin next to a taller piece of decor to add balance.
My favorite is mini pumpkins because they can easily sit on any shelf or countertop without getting in the way. Once Halloween is over, take down the spooky decor and leave the pumpkins for Thanksgiving.
Fall Bouquets and Faux flowers
Fall bouquets make for very easy Halloween decor. I used both faux flowers and dried flowers from my backyard. I love utilizing what I have in my own back yard for decor and it is so fun to make it an adventure. If you do not have a big backyard, ask a friend or go for a walk in a public park and clip a few dried pieces.
Faux flowers are a great choice because they can be used year after year and you can mix them with fresh or dried flowers to create a full bouquet. This orange maple leaf branch looks great with the dried flowers from my backyard.
Chalkboard Art
Chalkboards can be a really fun piece of decor that you can update throughout the seasons. Some chalkboards can be really expensive, but if you make it yourself, it doesn’t have to break the bank.
This chalkboard was created from a framed piece of art that I found at a thrift store. I painted the backing with chalkboard paint and used chalkboard pens to make the art look crisp. The best part about it is that you don’t have to be a chalkboard artist to make it look good. A simple “happy haunting” or “Happy Halloween” is simple and stylish.
Paper Bats
Paper bats are something I put up for Halloween every year. They are one of my go-to easy Halloween decor projects. Use this bat template to trace on black paper to create a classic bat look or on gold paper for a more stylish look, or really whatever color you want. Have fun with it!
Use double-sided tape to stick them to the wall. Create my bat swarm as if it is coming out of a cave; small bats, in the beginning, building out to a big swarm or just put a few around the corner or a door frame or up a hallway wall.
