Getting a Christmas tree is an event for us, we chop our tree down and that same night put on Christmas music, make a festive dinner and decorate the tree together. Each year we have a fresh-cut tree, I remember why I love having one in the house; the look, the smell, the constant reminder it is Christmas time, it’s great!
Quick tip: For an easy Christmas tree skirt purchase some faux fur from your local fabric store and tuck it under your tree; it’s easy and looks like snow!
Most of the time the bottom few branches of the tree need to be trimmed off and you can save them to repurpose into a holiday door swag! Door wreaths and swags can be expensive so it’s nice to not spend the extra money on a door decoration. This project is super easy and it only takes about an hour.
Supplies Needed
- 4-5 tree branches
- Floral wire
- Hot glue gun & glue
- Ribbon
- Embellishments (I used mini ornaments)
Start by trimming off 4-5 branches from the bottom of the tree, trim off the crazy twigs and save along with one branch. While the hot glue gun is warming up layer the branches on top of each other to form a swag shape.
Once you have layered and found your desired shape hot glue the branches together at the top. When the hot glue dries, wrap the floral wire around to secure the branches together.
Remember, your extra branch and twig trimmings? Layer them on top facing the opposite way and wrap the wire around them to secure.
Attach the embellishments using the green floral wire. Take the ribbon and wrap it around where the wire is, tie it in the back and leave extra length.
Either purchase a bow or make one – here is a tutorial on how to make a simple bow. Attach the bow using hot glue.
Lastly, hang the swag using the excess ribbon on the back. Stand back and take in the beauty of your finished project!

I really like this simple stuff. Martha Stewart has left me frustrated more than once.
