Hi Friends! I am so excited to share this DIY art project with you today! Okay so I’ll be honest, I have never been one to have a lot of art in my home. My walls are a little bare and mostly decorated with prints or wall decor (which I guess could be considered art, but you know what I mean).
This art project was inspired by the scrape technique which is a really fun way to paint. As I was fooling around with this technique I thought of a much easier way to achieve a similar look by using a wide paint brush (go figure, right!?). To add a little glam, I glued gold flake onto the painting.
What I love the most about this project is that it may be simple, but you can make it your own by choosing your favorite colors and adding the gold flake wherever you want it. I chose to add it to the edges of the painted stripes, but hey go nuts with it!
Also, I love how inexpensive it is. You may already have a few of these supplies in your house, but if you don’t this won’t break the bank.
What you’ll need:
- 8×10 frame
- 8×10 canvas
- 1-1/2″ paint brush
- Two colors of acrylic paint
- Gold flake
- Two foam paint brushes
- Elmer’s glue
Start by preparing your two paint colors and deciding which direction the paint stripes will go. I experimented with vertical and horizontal stripes that were about a half inch from the border of the canvas.
Begin with your first brush stroke and paint a stripe with a long continuous brush stroke that ends with the natural brush stroke at the end. Do not try to go back up the stripe the other way with the paint. This will cause overlapping.
The trick is to not stop the stroke once you have started, keep the brush consistent in pressure and even. If you feel you made a mistake, keep the stroke continuous. Mistakes are a matter of opinion, I think. Just go with it and that mistake could be the best part of your painting.
Allow the paint to dry completely. Add about a tablespoon of glue into a small bowl and add about a teaspoon of water. Mix until it combined.
Using the foam paint brush dab the glue on the areas you would like the gold flake. Using another foam paint brush, carefully add the gold flake onto the glue and press it down with a the dry foam brush.
Add as much or as little gold as you would like. You can also leave the gold flake textured, or press it down until it is flat. If you find you need more glue, add a little over the gold flake.
Allow the glue to dry completely.
Voila! Your art project is done! Place in the frames, if you cannot fit the canvas in the frame, remove the glass.
What is your favorite art project? Tell me in the comments!
