Okay you guys, I am so excited to share this recipe with you today! These chocolate spider webs are so dang cute, and really easy to make (I promise I am not lying as I know chocolate can be difficult). Remember when you were a kid during Halloween time and you would get to try all these new treats? Caramel apples, caramel corn, candy corn, the list goes on. It was part of the excitement of fall time! It was okay to indulge a little because of the season and the treats were everywhere. My mom made this super fun for my sister and me when we were growing up. She would find the next fun homemade treats like jello brain, or witches fingers and we would enjoy them for Halloween dinner. She would even offer them to the trick or treaters as the trick before they got their treats.
Okay, childhood story coming your way. One of my mom’s favorite Halloween treats is called, kitty litter treats. Yes, you read that right. They are brownies shaped as…well you know, what you would find in the litter box and they are served on grape nuts to look like litter. She would offer it to the kids before giving them their candy. Most would giggle and say “eww, noo!” of course knowing it was fake. One little kid was so unsure and when my mom took a big bite, he was horrified! He turned to his dad and said: “did you see what she did!?”. It is a retold story in our family that always makes us laugh. That’s my mom, Queen Halloween and always having fun.
Those spooky treats are a part of what makes Halloween so fun. Taking the symbols of the season and incorporating them into the foods we love the most. Well, I have got one for you today. Chocolate spider webs! These are so fun for all ages and truly are easy to make. These are not only delicious but they are on a stick so they are great to display, they would be perfect for a Halloween party food spread.
One of the things that makes this recipe such a breeze, is that you only need a few supplies. Chocolate, skewer sticks, wax paper, sprinkles, and a piping or ziplock bag. Once you have the supplies, you are basically melting chocolate and squeezing it onto some wax paper. Okay, okay it might be a little bit more than that but don’t worry! I’ve got all the tips and tricks…and the treats (ha! did you see what I did there?)
When melting the chocolate, you must do this on a double boiler. You can achieve this method by placing a metal bowl over a pot of simmering water. The bowl should not be touching the water, but just above. Stir the chocolate pretty much constantly so the chocolate does not burn. You can also use double boiler pot which comes in handy if you a bake a lot.
Quick tip: I use ziplock bags often in place of piping bags. Piping bags can be really important if you are trying to achieve that perfect piping but this recipe is not that so a ziplock bag works great.
Melt the chocolate until it is smooth. Line a large glass with a piping or ziplock bag and carefully pour in the chocolate. Allow the chocolate to cool for about 10 minutes. Cut a small hole at the point of the bag. Cut it smaller than you would think, test it and cut more off if needed. You want the chocolate thick enough that it won’t be super delicate but not too thick that the spider web is crowded. Always test your chocolate first to make sure it is the right temperature before piping. If it is too warm it will spread easily, but if it is too cool it will be hard to pipe. It should be smooth but hold shape.
Possibly the best thing about this recipe; you don’t have to worry about being perfect! It’s so freeing, you guys! Spider webs aren’t always perfect and these look better if you just go with the flow. Practice once and get into the motion of creating a smooth spiral and just go for it! Pipe the first straight line along the stick, the stick will most likely fall to one side and that is okay! Pipe another line over it to make the chocolate thick. You want the chocolate over the stick to be thick to prevent breaking. Once all the straight lines are done, pipe the spiral starting in the center and working your way out.
While the chocolate is still warm, dust with sprinkles. I chose orange and black sprinkles, but any color sprinkles will do. Once they have cooled in the fridge you can carefully peel off the wax paper. Now you have easy to enjoy chocolate spider webs! Store in the fridge until ready to serve. Display these in a bucket, tall glass or vase.
Chocolate Spider Webs
Ingredients
- 4 oz. dark chocolate
- 4 oz. white chocolate
- 16 skewer sticks
- 2 piping bags or ziplock bags
- Wax paper
- Sprinkles
Instructions
- Melt the chocolate over a double boiler until it is smooth.
- Allow chocolate to cool for 10 minutes.
- Line two tall glasses with the piping or ziplock bags and slowly pour chocolates into the bags.
- Cut the very tip off of the bags. Cut a smaller hole than you would think. Test the thickness of the chocolate and cut more off the tip if needed. It should be thick enough that the spider webs will not be too delicate but not too think that the spider web will be crowded.
- Place skewer sticks on a large piece of wax paper.
- Start by piping a straight line over the skewer stick. The stick will most likely fall to one side, this is okay. Go back over the line with more chocolate to make it thicker. You want this line to be thick so it won’t break.
- Continue piping straight lines until you have four straight lines around the stick.
- Starting in the center, start piping a spiral and continue until you have reached the outside.
- While the chocolate is still warm, dust with sprinkles.
- Place spider webs in the refrigerator until cold.
- Slowly peel off the wax paper from the spider webs
